Selenium was discovered in 1817 by a Swedish chemist. The name comes from the Greek word selene, for “moon”. It is the 34th element of the periodic table. It is closely related to sulphur.

Selenium is an essential micronutrient in all known forms of life. However in excess amounts, it is toxic to organisms. It is found in several proteins in the human body. It is also important for the immune system and is also believed to help in the prevention of cancer as mentioned in some scientific publications.

Selenium finds several applications in its various forms. Major uses of Selenium compounds include as a micronutrient in feed additives, as a decolorizing agent for glass, in pharmaceuticals, in metallurgy, organic synthesis to name a few.
